馬戲團演員帕比與士兵倍明朗哥自戰場回歸後發現他們的家己麵目全非，二人於是結伴而行；他們在帕比所偷的腳踏車上發現珠寶，與猶太麥麵包師的女兒艾絲特快樂地生活在一起，艾絲特產下一女後，卻因帕比所偷的珠寶而被竊賊所殺，帕與倍也因私藏珠寶而下獄……
