根據廣西壯族民間傳說改編而成的戲曲電影。
砍柴女劉三姐（黃婉秋）以唱幫窮苦人解氣的山歌名聞四鄉，卻也因此被視她為肉中刺的財主陷害，幸運撿得一條命後，她一路歌聲沿江而下。老漁夫（張巨克）和兒子阿牛（劉世龍）通過歌聲將她辨出，將她接入家中。遠近鄉民聽聞，都趕來與劉三姐賽歌，以為她已人頭落地的哥哥劉二（梁音）也因此機與她重逢。因為歌詞中多處直揭財主對窮苦人的盤剝，鄉民叫好同時亦令當地財主莫懷仁（夏宗學）極為恐慌。
為防鄉民暴動，莫懷仁想以淫威令劉三姐噤聲，隻換回自己的難堪，劉三姐言稱若賽歌勝過她，她自不會開口再唱。劉二怕妹妹重蹈覆轍，想帶她遠走他處，但劉三姐誓要好好懲治莫懷仁。莫懷仁找來一幫酸臭文人信心滿滿與劉三姐賽歌，不想個個被她罵得狗血噴頭。為讓劉三姐屈服，莫懷仁暗中將她綁至府中，施以錦衣美食，隻換來劉三姐的幾聲冷笑。早已與劉三姐暗中生情的阿牛、劉二及...
