風和日麗的日子裏，有些木訥呆板的青年（巴斯特·基頓 Buster Keaton 飾）和一群紳士貴婦打高爾夫球，雖然極想在心儀的女孩麵前大出風頭，但是青年委實黴運當頭，或者揮杆落空跌倒在地，或者小球直接掉入水裏，好不容易打到最後一杆，小球又被多事的小狗叼走，甚至連一群老婦人都要找他的麻煩。當然，這些還都不算什麽，更大的災難等在後麵。
某監獄，編號13的囚犯越獄逃亡，引來大群獄警追捕。他逃到高爾夫球場附近，剛好看見昏倒在地的青年，於是將自己的條紋囚服穿在了青年身上。過了一會兒，青年醒來，還在自顧自地打著高爾夫球，卻不知道自己已經成了即將被送上絞刑架的囚犯……
