20世紀初，中國湘西偏遠山村，一頂花轎千裏迢迢向楊家坳走來。轎子中的女孩名叫蕭蕭（娜仁花 飾），對於這個隻有12歲的女孩來說，結婚更像是一場熱鬧、好玩的遊戲。婚後，蕭蕭承擔起洗衣做飯的家務，還要帶著比自己小很多歲的丈夫玩。轉眼六年時光過去，蕭蕭已經成長為顧盼神飛的大姑娘。婆婆為她纏上裹胸部，卻無法擋住她對外部世界的好奇與向往。偶然機緣，蕭蕭與長工花狗萌生愛情，但在這個封閉的山村，等待他們的注定是一場悲劇……
本片根據沈從文的原著小說《蕭蕭》改編，並榮獲1988年法國蒙彼利埃國際電影節金熊貓獎、1988年西班牙聖賽巴斯蒂安國際電影節堂吉訶德獎。
